Hematopathology Fellowship

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, in partnership with Banner University Medical Center – Tucson (BUMC-T), offers a one-year, ACGME-accredited Fellowship in Hematopathology, beginning July 1st annually.
This academically focused fellowship provides comprehensive training in diagnostic hematopathology. The program supports a robust array of clinical services, including adult and pediatric hematology/oncology (with active bone marrow transplant services), the regional Hemophilia Center, and solid organ transplant programs. The fellowship is part of a long-standing tradition of excellence in hematopathology and is recognized as a regional referral center for the Southwest. The program also collaborates actively with the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG).
Training Overview
Fellows gain expertise in diagnosing benign and malignant hematologic disorders in both adult and pediatric populations. Specimen types include peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, body fluids, and various tissue biopsies involving hematologic processes.
The fellowship provides hands-on experience with a wide range of diagnostic modalities:
- Flow cytometry
- Immunohistochemistry
- Cytogenetics (FISH and karyotyping)
- Molecular diagnostics, including next-generation sequencing and microarray technologies
- Automated hematology and special coagulation
- Complex coagulation testing, with generation of narrative interpretations
Fellows also gain exposure to laboratory administration and medical leadership, with progressive responsibilities over the year to foster independence and clinical judgment.
Academic and Teaching Responsibilities
The fellow is a key member of the hematopathology team, serving as a bridge between clinical and laboratory medicine. Responsibilities include the supervision and education of pathology residents and medical students, as well as participation in interdisciplinary conferences and case discussions.
Research and Scholarly Activity
Fellows are encouraged to participate in research or scholarly projects, with opportunities for presentation at national meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

All required clinical education for entry into ACGME-accredited fellowship programs must be completed in an ACGME-accredited residency program, an AOA-approved residency program, a program with ACGME International (ACGME-I) Advanced Specialty Accreditation, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)-accredited residency program located in Canada.
