Forensic Pathology Fellowship

Forensic Pathology Fellowship
ACGME-Accredited – One-Year Program
Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner (PCOME) – Tucson, Arizona

The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner (PCOME) in Tucson, Arizona, offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Forensic Pathology. The program is designed to prepare fellows for successful completion of board certification requirements and a career in forensic pathology.

Training Environment
The PCOME is accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) and serves as the primary training site. Additional training experiences are provided through partnerships with the Tucson Police Department Crime Lab and a forensic toxicology rotation at NMS Labs.

The PCOME investigates over 4,500 cases annually, including approximately 100 homicides. Fellows will personally perform 200–250 autopsies under the direct supervision of one of eight board-certified forensic pathologists. Training also includes accompanying medicolegal death investigators to scenes to gain experience in scene investigation.

Specialized Experience
Located near the U.S.–Mexico border, the PCOME is internationally recognized for its expertise in the identification and examination of unidentified and skeletal human remains, particularly migrant decedents. In-house forensic anthropologists provide hands-on training in skeletal analysis and identification techniques.

Courtroom Experience
Fellows begin with observation of expert courtroom testimony by staff forensic pathologists. As the year progresses, fellows will have opportunities to provide testimony in cases they have personally handled.

Scholarly Activity
Fellows are encouraged to engage in a scholarly project during the year, with the goal of presenting at a national meeting and/or publishing in a peer-reviewed journal.
