Barun K De, PhD, NRCC, DABCC, FACB

Dr. De received Bachelor of Science degree with honors in chemistry and Master of Science in biochemistry from Calcutta University, India. He worked for few years at a National Cancer Institute in India before coming to US for post- graduate education in 1975. After completion of Ph.D. in biochemistry from University of Maryland in 1980, he underwent two postdoctoral fellowships in basic cancer research under the supervisions of Dr. Leon Heppel, National Academy of Sciences, at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY and Dr. Stanley Cohen, Nobel laureate, Medicine 1986, at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Later, he became highly interested in Clinical Chemistry. In 1993, he took a fellowship in clinical chemistry and toxicology under the supervision of both Dr. Amadeo Pesce and Dr. Bradley Copeland at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH. Following completion, he joined University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1995 as the Associate Director of clinical chemistry and toxicology. In 2005, Dr. De was appointed the Director of clinical chemistry and toxicology in the department of Pathology, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is a board-certified clinical chemist from the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, a board-certified toxicologist from the National Registry of Clinical Chemistry and a fellow of the American Association of Diagnostic and Laboratory Medicine. In addition, he is board certified in Point of Care Testing from the American Association of Diagnostic and Laboratory Medicine. From 2010 -2016, Dr. De served as a member of the board of directors in the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology and Molecular Biology. He was nominated to be the chair of nominating committee of this board in 2015. He has published more than 70 peer reviewed articles and meeting abstracts in basic and clinical sciences. He is a reviewer of both national and international journals and received recognitions as a Clinical Chemist from the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. In 2013 he was honored for the “Paul Finley Chemist Lecturer” from University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is the co-principal investigator of a Center of Disease Control (CDC) sponsored project on HIV screening and diagnosis. In 2019 he served as a regional president (Rocky Mountain Section) of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He has lectured on chemical pathology subjects and research topics in several international conferences as a guest or invited speaker. Since 2018, he was given the responsibility as the director of Point of Care Testing.
