The Department of Pathology offers multiple areas of specialty diagnostic expertise in anatomic pathology. In addition to providing diagnostic services for patients at University Medical Center, the department offers consultation services for patients, clinicians and non-UMC pathologists seeking a second opinion. We also provide confirmation of diagnosis for patients being seen at University Medical Center who have pathology material that has been interpreted at outside institutions. Areas of specialty expertise include:
- Breast pathology
- Cardiac and pulmonary pathology
- Cytology
- Dermatopathology
- Gastrointestinal and Liver pathology
- Genitourinary and Prostate pathology
- Gynecologic pathology
- Hematopathology
- Neuropathology interpretation
- Pediatric pathology
- Renal biopsy interpretation
- Transplantation pathology
We provide consultation services on both glass slides and wet tissues submitted from outside hospitals. In our interpretation of the specimen, we may employ multiple techniques as needed, including special histochemical stains, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, flow cytometry and electron microscopy. Consultations must be accompanied by the Specimen Requisition Form (see links above), signed/initialed by the treating clinician. Pertinent clinical information, including patient history, results of laboratory tests and imaging studies is requested for most accurate interpretation, as is contact information for the treating clinician for timely reporting of results.
Consultation request forms, patient information and glass slides should be sent to:
